Paul Vigay Book of Condolence

Paul Vigay's body was found on the 20th of February 2009, having been reported missing. Chris Williams has an excellent article over at Drobe that is well worth reading. The Portsmouth News site extended their initial report with a short biograph of Paul, which you can read here.

You can sign this book of condolence by just clicking the 'sign' link below, and filling out the form in your web browser. A handful of people have had problems with the form and it submitting an empty comment. If you experience this, please email me directly with what you'd like pasted to the address below.

I hope to expand this website over the next few days to contain more information on Paul's life and contributions. Apologies for its rather bland current look, as it was put together in a hurry. If you have contributions you'd like to submit (especially biographical ones), please email me. Otherwise, just click the sign link below to leave any messages of condolence for Louie and Paul's family.

Paul's family have requested that anyone wishing to make a donation in memory of Paul should send it to The Hillside Animal Sanctuary.

Acorns in memory of Paul Vigay

At Paul Vigay's funeral, guests were given pots containing acorns, to plant in memory of Paul. These should be kept indoors until they are old enough to weather the great outdoors; each pot comes with initial care instructions.

Once you have found your oak a permanent home, you will be able to return to this site and mark on a map where you have planted it, so we can see how far and wide these memorials to Paul's memory have spread. Stay tuned!

Paul Vigay Funeral Arrangements

Paul's mother Mavis, father John and sister Frances wanted to express the comfort they have gained from this Book of Condolence.

They, and Paul's girlfriend Louie Smith, are still coming to terms with the loss of Paul and are grateful for all the messages of support they have received.

The arrangements for Paul's funeral service have now been finalised, with the burial due to take place on Monday 16th March 2009 starting at 2.00 p.m at the South Downs Natural Burial Site at the Sustainability Centre, Droxford Road, East Meon, Petersfield, Hants, GU32 1HR. http://www.sustainability-centre.org/html/find_us.html

The family have been overwhelmed by the kind and insightful comments received from all over the world, and would like to invite all his friends and colleagues to celebrate his life in a memorial gathering in the conference centre at the Sustainability Centre after the burial service.

The burial will be at 2.00 p.m in the Natural Burial Site to be followed by the memorial gathering.

Anyone who knew Paul personally is welcome to attend the iburial and memorial gathering, and the family are keen to meet the people to whom Paul clearly meant a lot, to gain strength from each other, and help them come to terms with their loss.

The memorial gathering is expected to last for about an hour, and will be non-denominational.

To help with the arrangements for the funeral, the family have asked that anyone outside the family who would like to attend the memorial gathering would signal their intention to attend by adding their name to the list of attendees on the Book of Condolence website as soon as possible This is to allow for suitable seating and refreshments after the burial.

After the memorial there will be light refreshments to which everyone is invited. The afternoon will come to a close between 4-5 p.m.

Anyone attending the burial should be at the centre by 2.00 p.m. Please be aware that if attending the burial, this involves an approx. 10 minute woodland walk, and to dress accordingly. There is parking on site.

The family has asked that a donation be made instead of flowers at the funeral. Donations in memory of Paul should be made to the The Hillside Animal Sanctuary.

Anyone with any queries should contact Paul Middleton on 0772 044 6921.

Again, if you plan on attending the memorial service, please fill out this form as soon as possible!

I was really devastated when I heard the news about Paul. Having not been on the newsgroups for several weeks, I completely missed the news until a mutual friend rang me to say that Paul was no longer with us. Paul was one of the best RISC OS advocates I've ever known and his knowledge has always impressed me. I've been trying to remember when we first met, but it seems like he has always been there... Paul was the kindest, correct, most helpful and best informed person I've ever met. My sympathy goes out to Louie and Paul's family. He will be missed.

I know Paul through my wife Claire (they were great friends for 23 years). When I met Claire, she introduced me and Paul immediately accepted me into their circle of friends.

He spent many evenings at our house when we lived in Southsea, often coming on dog walks with us. We always had a laugh and he was a good and supportive friend to Claire, who is devastated by his death.

We also chatted about his work and research, which I found very interesting....I admire people who "think outside the box" and are not afraid to stand up for what they believe in.

Our long discussions will be greatly missed. Wherever you are, I hope you went with love and in peace.

Paul remains in spirit one of my dearest friends, I love him to the bottom of my heart as a most wonderful Being. I feel that few people realised how darned hard that man worked for so little return, the personal sacrifices he made to follow his path with heart, the brilliance and ingenuity that he brought into the world and his tenacity. In this incarnation he was the archetypal eccentric genius with the highest spiritual ideals as his guiding light.

I want to share a little of how close we were in a sense; I was visiting, always on the off-chance and we decided to watch a film together. After some discussion a title was agreed on. Lou said, "Paul, you didn't ask Stephanie what she thinks". He replied "I know what she likes" And of course he did; we watched Blood Diamond, it was the last time we were all together.

I still have so much I wanted to share with you Paul, and still only just starting to feel the total sense of emptiness without you. Where do we go from here? Such a sense of loose ends and unfinished work; perhaps for Paul, his work is done for now, but The Work remains. "They alone live who live for others."

Swami Vivekanada wrote "It may be that I shall find it good to get outside my body - to cast it off like a disused garment. But I shall no cease to work! I shall inspire men everywhere, until the world shall know that it is one with God."
Go with love, in peace Paul

Biggest love to Mum and Dad who introduced us.

This a great shock! I have communicated with Paul over a number of years and on two occasions recently. Once with a question about AntUtils and the other happily giving him positive feedback a MDF he had written for a widescreen monitor. This devastating news. As someone who has also lost a son, also called Paul, suddenly, within the last year, my thoughts are with his partner Louie and his parents all of whom must be utterly devasted. What can one say? One can't!

This is just so, so sad!

I saw the dreadful news on drobe and sat in disbelief for some time.

Personally I did not know Paul as well as some on here but I have regularly made use of articles and guides he wrote. He was also kind enough to help me on a number of occasions by email.

Paul was one of a kind and his passing will, for so many, be hard to get over.

My thoughts are with all the family and friends of Paul at this terrible time.

May your dreams be peaceful.

One must never presume a cause of death when "mysterious". Truth seekers ALWAYS eventually find the truth. Teachers live on in their students. I did not know this man. But having passed over and been brought back many years ago, I can attest to the fact that this soul is in great joy. His work will remain. Be of good cheer all ~ for we are travelers on our way home.

I tried to add a comment here when I first heard the news from Bill, but I could think of anything to say. I never actually talked to Paul though I exchanged email and Usenet posts on many occasions, especially around the demise of ZFC2 and the setting up of zfc-chat. I think the closest I ever got in person was back during one of the very few Acorn shows I ever attended (the show where Miyuki was bought, ISTR!)

All I know is that I was as shocked as anyone here when I heard the news, and I send my sincere condolences to everyone left behind.

I am so sorry to hear of Paul's passing over. He was always a balance in my life when dealing with the subject of crop circles and added to my life and my own works without hesitation. Paul was an outstanding soul with incredible attributes this reality will sorely miss.

I feel like I have lost a dear dear friend. I will have to go visit him in the spirit world. Thankfully, I believe in Life after Death, and so did Paul.

But his passing from here is a sorrow for this world and he will be sorely missed...

I am very sad to hear of the death of Paul Vigay.
I wish to offer my sympathies to his family and friends at this very sad time.
The only thing I knew of Paul was of his short explanation concerning the nature of the crop-circle phenomena on an internet website video, which I found to be the most insightful and fulfilling explanation of it's true nature that I have yet to encounter. For this alone I will be eternally grateful.

Paul was one of the few real Mavericks in the crop circle field. One of the few people to really keep an open mind and an open heart. His work on sound and higher dimensionality was ground breaking.

I first met Paul when I went to visit documentary-maker/authors Dr Jon and Rachel Sherwood in Wilcott(near Avebury)Wiltshire in 2002 to see the crop circles.
Dr Jon like Paul was a genius in various fields of science and technology, but was still new to the local crop circle community and tended to lay low on what he knew.
The crop circle researchers back then were a cliquey bunch, who could be clandestine and possessive with new facts, locations of new crop patterns etc. and many did not have time for a newcomer to the area, but Paul Vigay did.
He became Dr Jon's friend from the onset,as he was down to earth and happy to share his passion about crop circles, data, etc.
I liked him from the moment I met him .
Paul was a very close friend to fellow-researcher/writer Freddy Silva, whom I imagine must be crushed.
How many people know he was a brilliant sleuth and was the first to uncover the MI6 link to Princess Diana's murder.
For that he had his identity wiped out by MI6 and had to fight to get it back.Unfortunately that action instilled a fear in him of unravelling conspiracy theories after that, which Dr Jon tried to help him erase.
Still he obviously uplifted us all for his passion in the fields.
As Dr Jon passed away late last year too there must be some amazing crop circle research work being done now on the 'Other Side'.

We’re shocked and sad to hear the news. We were luckily to have worked with Paul for many years, from ArgoNet through to F2, always the one making tea for the guys in the office and being a good friend to us. To describe Paul we would say he’s “unique”. He’s intelligent, honest, weird with some of his ideas on things; always came up with strange conspiracy theories, funny, likable, a true “Techie”, just overall a really nice bloke. We’re sure our kids will be told lots of stories about him as he’s not here to see them grow up.

Our thoughts are with all his family and Louie. He will not be forgotten xx

Paul was my friend. I (and others) would chat to him for hours over lunch at school. Paul had a wonderful gift for maths and computer science, which he shared with others readily. He taught me the value of thinking critically and asking 'why?'. I will miss him.

To-morrow dies;

I worked with Paul for 6 years in the 1990's and that included a lot of hours put in getting a mixed network of a variety of flavours of RISC based machines and 8082 PCs to run happily together. The fact that he got the whole thing to work so well is a tribute to his ability and his tenacity. To be honest, I'm not sure he ever really forgave me for insisting we started to introduce Windows to the school system, but he coped in the end! This is a great shame and I pass on my condolences to his family.

How very sad. I always looked for Paul's Usenet messages, always worth a read. He always tried to help. We have lost a great person who was prepared to stand up for what he believed was right.

I met Paul during my Work Experience at Freedom 2, back in 2005. He and I spent most of the 2 weeks chatting about conspiracies, and arguing about which was better - Risc OS or Linux. We kept contact, and enjoyed many a good humoured chat. Often we'd swap stories of government injustices. He became a bit of a mentor to me for a little while. I was completely stunned to hear that he's passed away - perhaps he's worked out where the crop circles have come from now!

I'm so sorry to hear of the loss, I offer Louie my sincerest condolences - a man of his calibre absolutely deserved someone as lovely as you. I hope the support of all these people will keep you strong.
Lots of love, Vicky x

I was deeply saddened by the news of Paul's death. As a friend of his sister Fran, I knew him only briefly but have to say I instantly felt comfortable around him, he was that kind of man. I wish to express my condolences to his dear family, as well as to Louie and his many many friends. Paul has left such a legacy in all our memories, and I am glad to have known him. Much love, Fred

I'm very saddened by this tragic news and find it hard to believe. Paul was the first person in the crop circle world to give me help back in the Nineties when I wanted to do an overlay of a crop circle on a map, which in those days was beyond my meagre computing skills. He helped willingly and became someone I respected in the often choppy seas of crop circle research. Over the years we emailed occasionally and bumped into each other and he was always friendly, helpful and open. He will be saddly missed by many many people.
Bless you on this next part of your journey Paul.

I am shocked and pained on reading the news of Paul Vigay's death.

Paul's death is a big loss to the RISC OS community and to me. Paul was one of the greatest advocates we had of RISC OS. He was principled and committed, qualities that seem to be rare currently. Decency, honesty, good humour and cheerfulness are also qualities that I associate with Paul.

Paul was also committed to the fight for civil liberties which, bit by bit, we are losing in the UK, a concern of mine too. Perhaps I should not have been surprised when I discovered that he had, like me, joined the NO2ID campaign. In fact he was an area official.

Like others, I remember him at the RISC OS shows and when he came to give us a talk at Surrey And Sussex Acorn User Group as always cheerful, friendly and helpful. I know SASAUG members will share these thoughts.

My thoughts are for Louie and Paul's family at this awful time.

I used to work with Paul many years ago at Micronet (with Ian Burley, Paul Needs et al) and always enjoyed his enthusiasm and great knowledge on many many subjects.

A few years back I was on holiday with my wife in Thailand. Whilst getting ready to go out, we had the TV on in the background, a programme about the upcoming Mel Gibson movie "Signs".

Whilst idly listening to it whilst putting on my socks, a very familiar voice issued from the telly, talking keenly about crop circles.

"Hang on.." I thought, "I know that voice!" and turning to the screen saw Paul merrily explaining crop circles to me on the other side of the world. It was a bizarre but pleasant surprise to see him again, and will be my enduring memory of him.

He was due to come to a mini-reunion of Micronet/Prestel staff at my 40th birthday in April - we'll raise a toast to his memory.

I had the great pleasure to meet him at a number of RISC OS shows and via the ZFC forum, and will greatly miss his intelligent and insightful view on life. The civil liberties movement has also lost a valuable campaigner. RIP Paul.

We owe it to him to make sure that his death was an accident. Please, we must ask all the questions that he would ask.
