Paul Vigay Book of Condolence
Paul Vigay's body was found on the 20th of February 2009, having been reported missing. Chris Williams has an excellent article over at Drobe that is well worth reading. The Portsmouth News site extended their initial
report with a short biograph of Paul, which you can read here.
You can sign this book of condolence by just clicking the 'sign' link
below, and filling out the form in your web browser. A handful of people
have had problems with the form and it submitting an empty comment. If
you experience this, please email me directly with what you'd like pasted
to the address below.
>
I hope to expand this website over the next few days to contain more
information on Paul's life and contributions. Apologies for its rather
bland current look, as it was put together in a hurry. If you have
contributions you'd like to submit (especially biographical ones), please
email me. Otherwise, just click the
sign link below to leave any messages of condolence for Louie and Paul's
family.
Paul's family have requested that anyone wishing to make a donation in memory of Paul should send it to The Hillside Animal Sanctuary.
Acorns in memory of Paul Vigay
At Paul Vigay's funeral, guests were given pots containing acorns, to plant
in memory of Paul. These should be kept indoors until they are old enough to
weather the great outdoors; each pot comes with initial care instructions.
Once you have found your oak a permanent home, you will be able to return
to this site and mark on a map where you have planted it, so we can see how
far and wide these memorials to Paul's memory have spread. Stay tuned!
Paul Vigay Funeral Arrangements
Paul's mother Mavis, father John and sister Frances wanted to express the
comfort they have gained from this Book of Condolence.
They, and Paul's girlfriend Louie Smith, are still coming to terms with the
loss of Paul and are grateful for all the messages of support they have
received.
The arrangements for Paul's funeral service have now been finalised, with
the burial due to take place on Monday 16th March 2009 starting at 2.00
p.m at the South Downs Natural Burial Site at the Sustainability Centre,
Droxford Road, East Meon, Petersfield, Hants, GU32 1HR.
http://www.sustainability-centre.org/html/find_us.html
The family have been overwhelmed by the kind and insightful comments
received from all over the world, and would like to invite all his
friends and colleagues to celebrate his life in a memorial gathering in
the conference centre at the Sustainability Centre after the burial
service.
The burial will be at 2.00 p.m in the Natural Burial Site to be followed by
the memorial gathering.
Anyone who knew Paul personally is welcome to attend the iburial and memorial gathering, and the family are keen
to meet the people to whom Paul clearly meant a lot, to gain strength
from each other, and help them come to terms with their loss.
The memorial gathering is expected to last for about an hour, and will be
non-denominational.
To help with the arrangements for the funeral, the family have asked that
anyone outside the family who would like to attend the memorial gathering
would signal their intention to attend by adding their name to the list
of attendees on the Book of Condolence website as soon as possible
This is to allow for suitable seating and refreshments after the burial.
After the memorial there will be light refreshments to which everyone is
invited. The afternoon will come to a close between 4-5 p.m.
Anyone attending the burial should be at the centre by 2.00 p.m. Please be aware that if attending the burial, this involves an approx. 10 minute woodland walk, and to dress accordingly. There is parking on site.
The family has asked that a donation be made instead of flowers at the funeral. Donations in memory of Paul should be made to the The Hillside Animal Sanctuary.
Anyone with any queries should contact Paul Middleton on 0772 044 6921.
Again, if you plan on attending the memorial service, please fill out this form as soon as possible!

I met him on several occasions, most notably when he came and gave a very entertaining talk at the Bristol users' group some years ago, and he was always very courteous, knowledgeable and willing to share his knowledge with fellow RISC OS enthusiasts. His contribution to the platform through his advocacy and his software was particularly significant. He was a gentleman, and my thoughts go to Louie and Paul's family at this very sad time.

I first met Paul when I interviewed him for the then vacant position of Acorn/BBC Micromagazine Editor at Micronet 800.
Although his knowledge of the computer he wanted to write about was vast, he struck me as a quiet, methodical, incredibly intelligent and wickedly funny young man - a great combination to work with the bunch of first generation online hacks that we were back in 1988 or so..
Nothing changed that opinion over the course of the next view years - even when Paul decided to write a virus for the Archimedes, because Acorn said it couldn't be done, and he said it could.
Of course, he was right.
I haven't seen Paul since the early 90's, but was in touch with him occasionally- and again nothing seemed to have changed.
This news saddens me incredibly deeply - Paul was one of us that pioneered online journalism back then - something I am extremely proud of being involved with - as proud as I was to have known him and given him that job.
Goodnight Paul.

Stunned by the sad news. Although I did not know Paul personally, his presence within the RISC OS community was very well known and appreciated. A great loss to us all.

Even at this distance Paul had assisted me and I'm shocked and saddened to hear the news of his death.
My condolences to his family (Louie et al) and to the whole RISC OS community. We have lost a 'true believer' and are surely diminished by his passing.

Tragic news. I will now hold even closer the memories of the great times I had in his presence. I always needed help with computers and no matter what he always helped with a smile. My prayers go out to his family and close ones.
A wonderful man, I will never forget.

God Bless you Paul.

Very saddened to hear of Paul's demise - our paths interwove during the 1990s and it became apparent that his knowledge of all things BBC Micro, Archie and beyond was quite expotential. Like many of the extremely knowledgeable about his given subject, he was quiet and methodical. And a thoroughly nice chap. He will be sorely missed.

I've met Paul a large number of times at various RISC OS shows over the years and always found him to be a great bloke who would always give up his time. He was a great ambassador for the OS (though possibly not always appreciated as such) and to find this out was a great shock.
My condolences to Louie from us both.

Paul was a bright light in my life, he had a profound influence on me, and changed my life completely. Not only was he intelligent, passionate and dedicated to the causes he believed in, he was also an uncommonly intuative and sensitive man. Over the last 7 years,he awakened and guided me,and enabled me to be the person I never thought possible, and I truely ache to know I won't feel his presence in my life again.A deeply private and humble soul,he had no idea just how much he will be missed, and what a void his passing has left in my life, and the lives of others.
My sympathies, and indeed empathies go out to Paul's family.
Goodnight my alien geek, I will always miss you.

My deepest sympathy to Paul's family and friends and especialy
to Louie. Paul was one of the great supporters of RISC OS and
always willing to give friendly advice even if the question
was rather silly! His rescuing of Argonet by transforming it into
Orpheus was typical of a great inovator and problem solver not
only in the RISC OS world but in his other great love the MacIntosh
World. He will be greatly missed and I pray that the RISC OS
community will do everything possible to support those he has left behind.
